The problem

It has never been this easy to fool yourself

Today anyone can go from an idea to a beautiful backtest in two minutes. So we ran that exact process 200 times, to show you what it is worth.

200 simulated markets with no edge by construction (random walks, zero drift). On each one, 1,830 moving-average settings were backtested over two years and the best was kept (black). In red, the same rule over the following year. 78% of the winners showed a Sharpe above 1. 52% lost money the year after.

A desk runs the same idea backwards.

Everything is decided in writing first. The backtest comes last, and its only job is to try to kill the idea.

How a systematic desk does it
01 · The mechanism
Who is paying me, and why?
02 · The expectation
What should it earn, and where?
03 · The failure mode
When should it lose money?
04 · The kill rule
What result makes me drop it?
05 · The backtest
Only now. Run it, and let it try to prove you wrong.

A Sharpe of 0.74.
Is it worth a slot in your portfolio?

Strip out funding and it drops to 0.48. Count the 9 tries behind it and it shrinks again. Knowing what a number like this is really worth, and what to do with it, is exactly what the Lab teaches.

The end goal

The book stays. The strategies die.

The Lab is not about finding one perfect strategy. It trains you to run a book that outlives its strategies: every idea enters with a sheet, runs under a written kill rule, and is replaced when its edge dies.

Five habits that separate a desk from everyone else

None of them needs better code or more data. Each one has its own lessons in the Lab, and you apply all five on the two strategies you just saw, then on your own.

Habit
Most traders
A systematic desk
01
Start from a mechanism
Most traders
Start from an indicator, then hunt for a rule that fits the chart.
A systematic desk
Write down who is on the other side of the trade, and why they keep paying. No mechanism, no strategy.
In the course · momentum’s sheet names who pays
02
Write the kill rule first
Most traders
Look at the result, then find reasons to keep it.
A systematic desk
Decide which result ends the strategy before the first test. After the backtest, every threshold becomes negotiable.
In the course · FOMC was cut at +10.4%
03
Read where the P&L comes from
Most traders
Read one Sharpe ratio and stop there.
A systematic desk
Split the return into its drivers: signal, funding or carry, costs, a few lucky months.
In the course · 35% of momentum came from funding
04
Count every try
Most traders
Keep the best variant, forget the others.
A systematic desk
Log every variant. The number of tries is part of the result, and it deflates the Sharpe you can trust.
In the course · momentum: 9 tries, all logged
05
Judge it inside a portfolio
Most traders
Judge each strategy alone, on its own curve.
A systematic desk
A strategy earns its slot only if it improves the book it joins.
In the course · your strategy tested against a real book
What it produces

One page per strategy. Not a folder of backtests.

The five habits end up on a single sheet, written before the code and kept up to date after. This is the real one for the momentum strategy above. By the end of the Lab, you will have written your own.

crypto-xs-momentum.mdstatus: kept

Methods from the literature, not from forums

The tools in the course, from the deflated Sharpe to counting your tries, come from peer-reviewed work used on systematic desks. You get the ideas and the code, without the maths you don't need.

The real differentiator

1-on-1 mentoring, directly with me

Lucas Inglese
You ask, I answer
Not a community manager. Not an assistant. Me.
Your strategy ideas
Your sheets
Your backtests
Your blockers

On top of that, the members' Discord: share your sheets and read other people's research. People who build strategies, not signal-sellers.

Why 50 spots maximum?
50 seats

Because beyond that, I can't deliver quality mentoring. If I have to seriously answer 50 people, I can. If we are 500, I dilute, and you end up like in the courses you already know.

I'd rather cap at 50 than degrade the promise. It is not a marketing trick, it is a capacity constraint.

Most of my ideas die, and that is the point. Every one goes through the same sheet, the same diagnostic and the same kill rule. The few that survive, I actually understand. What used to take me weeks of going in circles now takes a few days.

What the Lab is not

Better you know it now than after paying. Three things people sometimes expect from a trading course, and what you get instead.

01
It is not
A strategy to copy.
Instead
A process you can reuse on every idea. One of the two course strategies is killed on purpose, so you see what a real cut looks like.
02
It is not
A weekend shortcut.
Instead
Weeks of hands-on work on your own strategy, at your own pace. The 8h30 of video is where it starts, not where it ends.
03
It is not
A fund’s budget.
Instead
A method built for what an independent researcher actually has: no team, no analysts, no paid data.
What you will have
A research process you can repeat on every idea, a vault to run it week after week, and the tools to tell a real edge from a lucky backtest.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How does it work?
An online course in a private member area, on desktop and mobile: recorded video lessons with lifetime access, plus the notebooks, strategy sheets and research vault to download. You also get 1-on-1 mentoring with Lucas and the members’ Discord.
What level do I need?
You should be comfortable reading and running Python (pandas, Jupyter notebooks) and with basic statistics: returns, volatility, the Sharpe ratio. No advanced maths required. Every notebook is provided and explained step by step.
How much time does it take?
8h30 of video, plus weeks of hands-on work on your own strategy. You go at your own pace.
Which markets does it cover?
The examples are on FX and crypto, spot and futures. The method itself applies to any market and any systematic strategy.
How is it different from the Alpha Quant Program?
In the Alpha Quant Program, you come with a strategy and we try to break it. In the Lab, you design it yourself, from A to Z.
Do I get a strategy I can trade?
You get a process and a fully documented strategy of your own. One of the two course strategies is killed on purpose. Nothing in the Lab is investment advice.
What tools and data do I need?
Python with Jupyter notebooks, and Obsidian for the vault, all free. No paid data needed: the vault lists free sources by asset class.
How does the mentoring work?
You send Lucas your ideas, sheets and backtests directly, and discuss with other members on Discord. Mentoring is capped at 50 members, and new seats open as members finish the course.
How do payment and refunds work?
One payment, lifetime access, no installments for now. If the Lab is not what you expected, ask within 30 days of your purchase and you are refunded in full.

Your next idea deserves better than a backtest

Give it a mechanism, a kill rule and an honest verdict. Four steps, the same for every idea.

01
A new idea
You don’t think “let me backtest that”. You ask who is paying, and why.
02
A sheet before the code
Mechanism, when it should lose, and the result that kills it.
03
A backtest you take apart
Where the money comes from, what it costs, how much is luck.
04
A clear verdict
Killed and logged, or kept, and you know exactly why.
